Asian Women Lawyers Subcommittee had another successful night on Wednesday where we hosted a “fireside chat” with Judge Kiriana Tan, with Simpson Grierson sponsoring the event and partner Karen Ngan leading the conversation in a relaxed setting. Judge Tan shared her personal journey to the bench, her multi-cultural upbringing (her ties with both her Asian and Māori background remain strong) and how she has advanced her career whilst being a mother of three.
Throughout the evening, the audience was held spellbound by Judge Tan’s humour, compassion and willingness to share her insights, her career highs and lows, her real life struggles and challenges, and how she has overcome or is coping with them. Her stories were truly refreshing, encouraging and relatable! The audience certainly had plenty of questions, with many attendees staying back to express their appreciation and respect for the Judge who was incredibly generous with her time and words. The audience did not hesitate to tell us what an exceptional speaker and role model Judge Tan is. It was an inspiring night to say the least!
